One of the perks surrounding addiction treatment today is the options available; treatment is no longer looked at with a one-size-fits-all approach. We once lived in a world where addiction treatment facilities required people to stay at least 30 days with no access to the outside world. Some facilities continue this practice, but recently, thanks to partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP), individuals can seek treatment for their addiction while maintaining the flexibility needed to continue their lives.

PHPs and IOPs may be different, but they are effective treatments for individuals in different circumstances. People often put their recovery on hold because finding the right time can feel impossible. There’s no right or wrong time to enter treatment, and no one should feel like they have to put their life on hold to start their recovery journey.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

A PHP—or what we at the Dream Recovery sometimes refer to as a partial day program—is an excellent option for clients looking to continue their daily routines. A PHP offers individuals who have completed detox and a residential treatment program a support structure while transitioning back into their everyday lives. Clients have the chance to remain in their homes and commute to a treatment facility for support. It provides independence and the freedom to continue school, reconnect with family, or begin looking for employment while still having a safe, structured space essential for early recovery.

PHPs vary from one facility to another. At Dream Recovery, PHP consists of five to six-hour days, five days a week. The program is designed to offer clients a step-down program from detoxification and residential treatment where they can learn more about the tools needed to maintain recovery early. Clients will meet with a therapist and case manager weekly, attend group therapy sessions, and receive relapse prevention strategies. Thanks to PHP, you’ll be able to return to your everyday life while still focusing on your recovery, mental health, and goals you hope to achieve.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Dream Recovery also offers an intensive outpatient program for our clients desiring flexibility. IOP is an intensive program focused on the individual stepping down from an even more intense level of acute care. Similar to a PHP, IOPs offer clients the chance to continue therapy and focus on recovery. Programs like this are designed for individuals who are in a position to continue working and caring for their families while still needing to be held accountable in their recovery.

At Dream Recovery, our IOP is generally a three to five-day program per week for a few hours a day. IOP focuses on offering support once clients have a relapse prevention plan in place, a strong support system, and need a little extra help in their recovery. By entering into an IOP with Dream Recovery, clients can participate in weekly individual and group therapy sessions and have access to our dream team of professional therapists and case managers. If you’ve already established footing in recovery and are looking for a little extra support, IOP might be the right choice for you.

Understanding the Differences Between PHP and IOP

Recognizing which is the best option for you in terms of PHP or IOP requires understanding where you are in your individual recovery. The primary difference between the two programs is the level of support offered for each. If you have completed detox or residential treatment and have a more stable foundation in your everyday life but need a little extra support, an IOP is probably the best option for you. These programs are ideal for clients who have established a recovery structure or relapse prevention plan. IOPs allow you to focus on essential responsibilities like family or work while still providing extra support a few days a week.

The significance behind a PHP is that this level of care is typically for individuals who need even more support post-detox and treatment. IOPs, on the other hand, are best designed for people with relapse prevention already in place, whereas PHPs help people focus on relapse prevention and help find their footing when they are new to recovery. Both focus on the step-down process of going from treatment to being active in recovery. Regardless, determining where you’re at in your recovery and deciding which program is right for you offers you independence and empowerment, and there’s no shame in whichever program you choose. Either way, the dream team at Dream Recovery can help you today.

Entering detox and seeking addiction treatment is an essential first step on your path to recovery. However, the steps you take after detox and residential treatment are just as important. Upon leaving detox or a residential treatment facility, individuals have to figure out how to transition back into their everyday life while maintaining recovery. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) can help you do that. A PHP at Dream Recovery requires five days a week, six hours a day program that allows clients to continue working on mental health, therapy, and relapse prevention while returning to everyday life. Our IOP program offers clients the opportunity to focus on individual and group sessions a few hours a day, three days a week, while still focusing on family, work, and other responsibilities in their everyday lives.
